Kate Carmichael, LPC-S

Clinical Director

Kate Carmichael is the Owner and Clinical Director of ATX Counseling.  Kate created ATX Counseling to provide a thoughtful approach to therapy for Austinites. Many therapists begin their careers with a lack of training and support, and Kate wanted to create a place for therapists to learn and grow to provide the very best care to clients.

Kate has over 15 years of clinical experience working in the non-profit and in the private practice settings. She is devoted to her work by providing honest, authentic, and caring support to her clients and staff.

Therapy with Kate is about helping clients move through what might be keeping them stuck and helping them navigate the ups and downs of each stage of life in an honest and compassionate way.

Q&A With Kate

In your opinion, how does therapy work?

I believe we’ve all developed various skills to navigate the complexities of life. Some of these skills serve us well, while others might hold us back. For instance, caring about what others think can be crucial at certain stages of life, yet it can also lead to social anxiety and self-consciousness at other times. Helping clients fully embrace these aspects of themselves and harness their unique strengths to overcome challenges is essential in creating a more meaningful and fulfilling life experience. Any advice for clients?

My biggest advice is to try to be as open and honest with your therapist as you feel comfortable. If something isn’t working or therapy is unhelpful, sharing this as directly as possible will allow you both a chance to practice being more open and will also help you get your needs met. It’s a good place to practice being fully yourself.

As you can see from the photo above, I love France! Especially the pastries. I also have identical twins and have learned A LOT about myself from them. They’ve taught me to be more present and a better listener.
